Hoy es 21 de mayo y en Estados Unidos “Dr. House” le dice adiós a las pantallas luego de ocho años al aire. En el Perú el capítulo final aún tardará en llegar, pero como no son pocos los que han seguido la serie vía Internet, es momento de enumerar las razones por las que un complejo doctor capaz de descubrir las más raras enfermedades y las intenciones más ocultas se convirtió en uno de los personajes preferidos de la televisión.

1. PORQUE ES UN PERSONAJE IMPOSIBLE
Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) es un personaje de contradicciones: es un tipo hosco que maltrata a sus pacientes y se cree Dios (es más, empata a tres con él en una surrealista competencia acerca de sus aciertos y errores), pero en cada capítulo se equivoca una y otra vez. Necesita un equipo, pero uno de sus dramas constantes es la soledad. Tiene un único amigo (el doctor James Wilson), pero todo el mundo quiere acercarse para ayudarlo a superar sus adicciones. Cree en su propia divinidad lo suficiente para decirles a todos los otros que son unos tontos sin remedio, pero siempre comete errores hasta llegar al diagnóstico final. Sabes que no existe, pero quisieras conocer a un tipo como él.

2. PORQUE HOUSE ES SHERLOCK
De las similitudes entre ambos se han dicho mil cosas que David Shore (creador de House) ha calificado como inspiraciones para el personaje: ambos son genios de la deducción, tienen talento musical, usan drogas y tienen un leal y único gran amigo. Para los que hemos leído alguna de las historias del detective de Baker Street, queda claro que no solo se parecen en sus métodos, sino también en su manera de ver el mundo.

3. PORQUE ES BRILLANTE
Empecemos por decir que House trabaja en una especialidad que nadie tiene. La “medicina de diagnóstico”, nombre del departamento que maneja en el ficticio hospital de Princeton-Plainsboro, no existe, pero suena necesaria: es a donde llegan todos los casos que nadie más puede resolver. “Resulta que tus opiniones no dan buenos resultados. Te aconsejo que uses las mías”, dice en algún capítulo. Yo le creo.

4. PORQUE CONOCE LA NATURALEZA HUMANA
“Everybody lies” no solo es el nombre del episodio piloto, sino también la base sobre la cual House fundamenta todo lo que hace: “He aquí un axioma sobre la condición humana: todo el mundo miente. La única variable es sobre qué”, le dice a un grupo de estudiantes de medicina. Más de una vez se ve esta situación: si un paciente le dice que no consume drogas, él manda a su equipo a que allanen la casa del enfermo hasta dar con estupefacientes. Eso sí, en la última temporada es incapaz de aceptar la verdad universal de que todo el mundo muere: con su mejor (y único) amigo resignado a fallecer de cáncer, él trata de obligarlo a luchar.

5. POR SU CINISMO
Sus frases no solo son aquellas que desnudan los motivos de los demás (“La gente no cambia”, dice a menudo), sino las que revelan verdades que no solemos decir (“Los regalos nos permiten demostrar cuán poco conocemos a alguien”). También hay las que revelan un humor demasiado artero, como cuando dice sobre un paciente que recibe revelaciones divinas lo siguiente: “Si hablas con Dios eres religioso; si Dios habla contigo, eres psicótico”. Cada capítulo deja alguna para tenerla apuntada en el libro de las verdades universales como aquella que le robó a Mick Jagger: “You can’t always get what you want”.

6. POR LA MÚSICA
Hugh Laurie es también un músico que al final de varios capítulos nos regala una canción en piano. Si no, bien podemos escuchar a “Band from TV”, un grupo formado por actores que incluye a Jesse Spencer (el doctor Robert Chase de House toca el violín), Teri Hatcher (“Susan Delfino” en Desperate Housewives), Greg Grunberg (Matt Parkman en Héroes), Adrian Pasdar (Nathan Petrelli en Héroes), entre otros. 7. PORQUE ES EL AMIGO QUE TODOS QUEREMOS TENER
Su relación con James Wilson es bizarra: viven haciéndose bromas de mal gusto y haciendo que la vida del otro sea insoportable. Por culpa de House la novia de su amigo murió y por ello casi hay un “divorcio” en esta pareja que para algunos hasta tiene tintes de romance. Lo cierto es que su amistad es lo único (casi) estable en la serie y aquello que en ocho años ha sabido superar cualquier problema.

8. POR EL JURAMENTO HIPOCRÁTICO
House casi nunca ve a sus pacientes sino hasta el momento final en que la verdad se revela. Tiene problemas para atender en la clínica del hospital porque odia tener contacto con ellos. “Trato enfermedades, no pacientes”, argumenta para su falta de empatía o para sus métodos poco ortodoxos. “¿Preferirías a un médico que te coja la mano mientras mueres o uno que te ignora mientras mejoras?”, es la pregunta que hace en el primer episodio. ¿Tú qué prefieres?

9. POR LA MEDICINA
House es una serie muy real. Tanto que basó su creación en la columna “Diagnosis” que la doctora Lisa Sanders tenía en el NY Times. Ella es ahora asesora médica de una serie gracias a la cual sabemos qué es la CIPA (o la incapacidad de sentir dolor), cómo se comporta el Lupus (aunque solo se ha diagnosticado certeramente un caso de este mal en los ocho años de emisión) y hasta se da cuenta de casos tan extraños como los de “Fetus in fetu”.

10. PORQUE ES HUMANO
House se equivoca en todos los capítulos: da una serie de diagnósticos que resultan erróneos antes de un momento de epifanía en el que acaba demostrando que es un genio. Pero también está equivocado en la forma en que se llevan las relaciones humanas y parece que, al final de la serie, acabará admitiéndolo. ¿O no?
